Five Points & Family!
So let me rewind 3 or 4 weeks back...I'm in LAX in the middle of a 4 hour layover (which isn't terrible in LA standards)...and I get a phone call from Marlene (pictured below) wanting to book a shoot for the next day...she knows I'm going to be in Florida for just about 35 hours. PROBLEM...my gear is in Oregon...SOLUTION...I call Kathryn Brown...I ask if I can use her 5dII...she's so nice and let's me pick up the camera at midnight moments after I land in Jacksonville...I take a 50mm...a 16-35mm just b/c I like a 35mm...and that's all...no lights...no nothing else!
So I present to you Marlene and family...they live in Five Points...I'm a Nikon guy, so I had to hustle to make that Canon work for me...it did! Enjoy and thank you Kathryn!

A day in the life of...
During my family sessions, I try to create an environment that will help the family be themselves...to help the family interact with true emotions...but this is always difficult to achieve within a two hour window...in the middle of some park. So I decided to offer "A day in the life shoot" (which should be on the website very soon). A day in the life is exactly how it sounds. It's me living with your family for a day, documenting the things you normally do! It's a photo-documentary of your life...it's really REAL!
[Segue]
Yesterday, I got to live with the Grimsley's! I got there in the morning and caught breakfast and the kids watching Saturday morning cartoons...we walked the neighborhood, went to the Riverside Arts Market (RAM), watched a soccer game, went bowling, played outside, watched TV, ate dinner, cleaned up......ok, you get my point...I really did live with the Grimsley's!
Here's a few shots from the day...I should have a slideshow soon so that you can experience the entire day...enjoy!

Here's just a few pictures from the day...enjoy!

Carmen, Rafael, Jetti, & River!
This is probably the most diverse montage I have created yet! Today I got to hang-out with Carmen and her family. (Carmen is the Executive Director for the Riverside Avondale Preservation). I met Carmen a few weeks ago during RAP 180 at the Underbelly. She's super cool...and so is her entire family! As you can tell from the montage, we had a lot of fun...and some serious spontaneity!
Ahhh...and because this popped-up during a conversation with Rafael...Carmen's husband...I'd like to share this bit of info with everyone. As a photographer, I have to back-up all of my files in various places. Backing up on extra hard drives is cool and necessary...but we have to take it step further...we have to get our files saved outside of our houses (b/c of theft or fire)...so I save my files in the cloud! Yes...I additionally back-up my files with Backblaze. I use Backblaze because they back-up external hardrives (not all companies do) & because it cost about $60 for a full year of unlimited storage! The con of using Backblaze is it's speed...it takes quite it bit of time...like months to back-up 500 gigs...but once you get caught up...it's pretty fast! That was my lesson for the day...I hope you enjoy the montage!

Giety, Tim, & baby Shireen!
Greetings everyone! Meet Giety, Tim, and Shireen! Once again, Anna Marie (Jacksonville Magazine) got a gift...this time it was for her other son, Tim...and his family! If you scroll down a couple of posts, you can view Tim's brother's shoot (Kelly & Chris).
Giety & Tim are very laid back...perhaps down to earth is a better description...they're aren't so laid back that you'd wonder if they had a heart beat...but they are so laid back that a sense of peace emanates from their family...
I met them at Anna Marie's house (which is super cool...I love the wood floors...and her father's photos). We hung-out...and waited patiently to capture some sweet moments.
I'm going to try something new, because I realize a few photogs visit my blog...so I want to offer more than just fotos.
So here's a little info:
I shot primarily with my 50mm & a 35mm lens that Michelle loaned to me ...thank you! All the shots here, except for the one where the family is laying down and Giety is resting with Shireen, are shot with the 50mm. I borrowed the 35mm b/c I knew I'd have some tight spaces...I chose the 35mm over my 17-50mm because I don't like the distortion from the 17-50mm...and because it's widest aperture is only 2.8...the 35mm opens up to 1.8...hence, I get more light...more ambient light...less artificial light needed. But with that said, only one of these pictures was shot with natural light, exclusively. Can you figure out which one?
What I learned today?
With all sessions with babies or kids...I learned to be patient...to wait...if the baby cries, take a break...don't try to force anything. We have to accept, as photographers, that we aren't always in charge of our shoots...as a matter of fact, the more space and less direction I give, the better the results!
Give me feedback on my info...let me know if it helps any...
Enjoy!

Darcy, Matt, & Anna...a year later!
Around this time last year I was given the opportunity to hang-out with Darcy, Matt, & Anna...well, this year we did it again! I love working with families multiple times...you really get to document the family's growth...and Matt's increased gray hairs - sorry Matt, couldn't help it...I owe you one...or you can knock my thinning top...?
Enjoy!
A moment by themselves...kind of...
